A sleek supernatural train full of ballet performers and musicians travel through the fog and rain to perform their mysterious show. On All Saints Day the members of the traveling ballet company, The Apple and the Pearl, find themselves exploring their own inner workings as the supernatural closes in. The performers bring their all every night for an audience they are not allowed to look at. It is the Fae or the dead that attend and leave behind jewels and random offerings for the performers? Each member of the cast is there for at least a year and a day, no matter their private fears and personal losses. Some stay on for years, some serve one term, but all are changed by their time.
The Apple and the Pearl is a series of vignettes following the individual ballet performers, technicians, the chef, and musicians that make up the group. Author Rym Pechacha’s work feels a big like Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, but with far more ballet. The book is beautiful, but it’s more a lyrical explanation of the mind and emotional worlds of the characters on All Saints Day than full of action. The Apple and the Pearl feels like extended poetry more than a novel.
