Premiering at the LA Shorts International Film Festival on August 7th, the new short film Fortune House follows an immigrant delivery driver caught up in a mythic game of mahjong with three demons. The film stars Forest Lin, Tony Kim, Alexandre Chen, Vivian Lee, and Joel Chang. It is directed by LA based filmmaker Yihoung Exa Huang.
Here’s the synopsis:
Fortune House offers a magical realist immigration fable as a desperate immigrant delivery driver stumbles into a mahjong parlor run by three demons, where he enters a demon’s deal: win the game, and they will grant him a green card. Blending magical realism with dark humor, the film transforms the anxieties, compromises, and hidden transactions of immigrant survival into a Faustian bargain, asking a single question: when the powerless are forced to negotiate with a system rigged against them, what do they have left to put on the table.
The film highlights the terrifying nature of immigration and a ruthless system that decides who gets to stay and who is forced back into another world, whether or not it is right or fair.
