Almost 40 years ago Mandy Patinkin stole hearts with his left-handed fencing as Inigo Montoya in the cult classic film The Princess Bride. In honor of decades of people inspired to join fencing from that sequence, the USA Fencing team has appointed the Emmy and Tony award-winning actor as the honorary Team Captain for USA Fencing at the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“When Mandy and I first spoke, what struck me wasn’t the movie, though we got there eventually, “says Phil Andrews, CEO of USA Fencing. “It was how deeply he understood what this sport gives people:
discipline, confidence, a community and a lifetime of joy. We could not ask for a better honorary Team Captain to lead our fencers, and our sport, into a home Games in Los Angeles.”
