In Apocalypse by Blair Howard, Harry Starke gets visited by an FBI agent former friend friend who tries to enlist Starke’s assistant. Intel has shown that a group of Iranian terrorists have gotten hold of a backpack nuclear bomb. Surveillance indicated that Harry’s old enemy, Shady Tree, executed the one member of the Iranian group who was going to report to the FBI. The agent wants Starke to locate Shady and help stop the nuclear threat, which he thinks is targeting a nuclear power plant. But with Starke’s wife, Amanda, due to give birth to their first child any day now, Starke hesitates to get too involved.
Anyone who enjoys thrillers will certainly appreciate Apocalypse. The rest of the book moves at a fast pace as Starke’s team tracks down Shady and works to stop the nuclear device from destroying the city. The path to the solution gets grizzly and intense, with a creative method of dealing with the bomb. I didn’t like the violence and torture, though. Further, the book ends on a cliffhanger, which is very frustrating.
The audio edition of the book is performed by Tom Lennon, who has a voice that seems well- suited to the character of Harry Starke. He uses clear expression and a strong selection of voices for each of the characters. His sense of timing adds to the effectiveness of the performance.
I enjoyed much of Apocalypse, though the cliffhanger at the end left me unhappy. The book takes off at breakneck pace and doesn’t stop until the end. It provides lots of excitement. I give the book four stars.
