Stan Lee: A Remembrance

Premiere Of Disney And Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange” on October 20, 2016 in Hollywood, California.

Today we lost a legend in the realm of comics and movies. Stan Lee, creator of some of the most famous characters in superhero history. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The Hulk and Iron Man were all some of his creations. Along with artists like Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, Marvel Comics became the powerhouse we know today.

Lee wasn’t perfect, but he did create a large portion of many of our childhoods. He died today at 95 after a series of illnesses.

Our writers have a few words about their experiences with Stan:

When I saw him at LA Comicon he talked about how he just liked being an every day Joe who could inspire others. He liked Spiderman because he saw himself as Spidey. A guy trying to get through life with immense responsibility thrust upon him.

He also stopped in the middle of a crowd at Phoenix Comicon a couple years back when my step dad, who suffers from Arthrogryposis (a super rare condition that affects his entire body), called out to him. Stan Lee pushed past his guards and let my Step-Dad take a photo and chat with him.- Sam Kitts

I don’t have words to describe how the news of Stan Lee’s passing makes me feel. I know that his comics have changed my life for the better. I, like many, used comic books to help me deal with the not to pleasant parts of my life and I fought strength in the characters he helped create. He crafted stories that were, first and most importantly, about people. The superpower he was most known for writing was simply humanity. Seeing Peter Parker struggle with family obligation helped me deal with mine. Watching Tony Stark grapple with the pain of grief, helped me cope with mine. I am heartbroken to lose a true legend and icon. My life has truly been made super because of his great works.- Amanda Conley

My husband hangs an Iron Man canvas in our living room. I have a series of Captain America items strewn about the house. It seems odd to imagine that we will never see Stan Lee do a cameo in the movie adaptations of his creations again. Stan Lee was always a name on the board at the convention. One time I saw him at a convention with two beautiful young women on his arm leading him into a convention. I laughed because he looked both pleased and uncomfortable at the same time. So many of my friends have loving stories about Stan stopping to speak to him, or making them feel like they were the only one there, even within a crowd of hundreds. He will most certainly be missed.  – Victoria Irwin
