From Wild Eye Releasing comes the Portuguese The Forest of the Lost Souls on Amazon Prime and Blu-Ray, with brand new artwork.
Written and directed by José Pedro Lopes, the psychological “coming-of-age” film follows an old man and a young woman named Ricardo and Carolina as they meet in the “Forest of the Lost Souls,” a forest where people often go to commit suicide. As they get to know one another, it becomes clear that not everyone are not what they seem. The film stars Daniela Love, Jorge Mota, Mafalda Banquart and Lígia Roque.
This poster art sells the pants of this for me. The skull. The lone girl smoking in a hazy forest, the blue tone to the grey. The nail in the coffin, though, is that I am a sucker for a good vintage font. This looks like a creepy book you would find on your mom’s night table in the 80’s, and I love it. From the poster art alone I am going to watch it immediately, but the plot sounds engrossing and cloying, just like this forest feels like in the artwork.
The film itself is breathtakingly stark, with deep contrasts that sincerely took my breath away. Each scene looks like an art project. The tones are still reflected in the cover art, but shows the state of the character’s minds – dark, isolated and murky with doubt.
