In Peril by Post by Sheri Cobb South, Bow Street Runner John Pickett is given an assignment by his magistrate. Mr. Colquhoun has received a cryptic letter asking for a Runner to come to the Lake District without stating who has written the letter. Mr. Colquhoun sends Pickett to the Lake District with Julia, his wife of three months, to have a honeymoon while trying to get to the bottom of the case. The pair works together to make themselves visible for the letter’s writer to reach out to them while enjoying their time on a honeymoon together.
When they take a picnic lunch to the cliffs overlooking the ocean, while Pickett takes a nap, Julia notices two people walking along the cliff, only to see one person push the other off the side of the cliff, killing the victim. Going down to the bottom of the cliff, Pickett discovers that the murdered man was the author of the letter, creating many more complications for Pickett to be able to solve his case. He must get busy before someone else gets murdered as well.
I really liked listening to Peril by Post. I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, and this book has proven to be as good as the previous books. I love the historical setting with all its details to make it feel as realistic as possible. The characters continue with the natures they showed in the earlier books, and we find ourselves especially interested in learning about Julia as she goes through the pregnancy she thought was never possible due to her not having had children with her first, late husband.
Joel Froomkin continues performing the audio edition of this delightful series and comes through strongly as usual. He makes this book seem very real to the listeners and plays the historical roles effectively. I can’t imagine this series seeming nearly as fun as performed by any other narrator.
I had a great experience listening to Peril by Post. Cobb South produces books frequently enough throughout the year that one might expect them to become formulaic and trite, but I’ve been pleased to note variety and cleverness within the plot of each book. I give this book five stars!
