Marnie Winters is dead. While death is of course a shock, it’s nothing compared to being assigned a social worker in The Department of Spectral Affairs. Xel, her case worker, has a full name no one can pronounce and a can-do attitude. When Marnie finds she is unable to go on, but there’s not really anything unfinished keeping her behind, and a ton of paperwork, Xel guides Marnie into work as a civil servant in the afterlife. With an office no expects much from, and spirits in need, Marnie might just be exactly where she needs to be.
It’s Your Funeral is funny, but it also deals with some pretty serious subject matter, including mental health struggles. It also deals with annoying coworkers and difficult bosses. While the age range is listed for teenagers, this is a great read for adults as well; especially those who right now are struggling with connection issues. I absolutely adore Carol, a strange tentacled creature that speaks in horrifying predictions. The comic ends up being a lot like Parks and Rec with the afterlife. The art from Ellen Kramer is upbeat and adorable, and the story from Emily Riesebeck is fun to read.
