Crema by Johnnie Christmas and Dante Lutz is a comiXology original and just one of the sweetest spooky stories I’ve read in a long time.
The story is that of Esme, a coffee addict who speaks to ghosts. Along the way she falls in love with Yara, and together they have to navigate arson, evil ghosts, soul sucking coffee corporations and new love. Crema is a three part story that comes in at just over 120 pages. The art is lovely; soft colors and beautiful locations. The story is sweet and smart, and if you like coffee, then you are definitely in for a treat with this one.
I really enjoyed the characterizations of the two main ladies. Esme is lonely for honest human affection and Yara is feisty and fickle. Together they find a love that brings them both to a home that neither expected. Interspersed with their relationship is Yara’s family drama, all the way back to her ancestors who started the farm that grew the coffee that is so central to the story. The romance and the scary go hand and hand in this story and they both lift each other in interest. You won’t get bored reading this story at all.
Crema releases today on comiXology as part of their original content. It does contain a few sexy scenes that definitely make this story not for younger readers. It doesn’t detract from the story at all though. I was very glad to see that they weren’t there simply for shock factor, or to sexualize characters that are more than their parts. The scenes are well drawn and only bring good things to the story, which can’t always be said for LGBT relationships in the past.
In the end, I really, really enjoyed this story and would gladly recommend it to my comic loving friends.
