With Hanukah starting tomorrow, and Christmas and Yule just around the corner, we have a few suggestions for the geeky art book and movie book lovers in your life. Links to the books are in each title for your convenience.
Alien: 40 Years, 40 Artists: Whether you’re a fan of Alien, or just amazing fan art, this book is a fantastic look at how the movie franchise inspired artists. Each picture is accompanied with information in regards to the artist’s history with the Alien films and how it inspired them. You’ll be surprised by how many people watched this movie WAY TOO YOUNG as kids.
The Making of Aliens– SPEAKING OF ALIENS… This book is massive and absolutely fabulous. It goes through the entire history of how the script was put together, the process to get the movie made, and is full of design art. My personal favorite part of this book is seeing the actor in the Xenomorph costume without the head and just hanging out.
Over the Moon: Illuminating the Journey– Over the Moon was a surprise delight over 2020. The film follows a young girl who builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a Moon Goddess. This book includes concept art, interviews with people who worked on the film and final art work. This is a super cute book and fun to flip through.
Blade Runner 2049: Interlinked- The Art – Concept art junkies, this one is absolutely stunning. Blade Runner 2049 is a feast for the visually inclined, and this art book does the film equal justice. As a Blade Runner fan, I’m in love. For those fascinated by light and shadow work, this is a must own for reference.
A Cat’s Tale: A Journey Through Feline History– Baba the cat is all over author Dr. Paul Koudounaris’ social media, and for good reason. This particularly photogenic cat takes readers on a trip through the history of cats. As always, Koudounaris’ photography is fabulous and Baba is a delight. (This title is currently backordered, but readers who are familiar with the Order of the Good Death or fascinated by bodies will love any of his gorgeous books on the subject).
Accidentally Wes Anderson– Filmmaker Wes Anderson has a definitive style, and his film composition is fairly legendary. In this new book, photographs of real-life places are given fascinating facts behind each photograph and place. This book was authorized by Anderson himself.
