Self care via webcomics

2020 has been, for many people, a seriously bad year. Stress and anxiety has grown and self care has become an important part of our lives.

As a long time reader, self care to me, has always been curling up with a good book. The thing is, this year, this dumpster fire of a year, I just haven’t been able to get in that headspace. I even wrote about it on my personal blog.

Luckily for me, at the beginning of the year I stumbled upon webcomics. I’m not at all sure how I never got there before, but I was pretty stoked to land there. My trek through the webcomic world started with Check Please! and Miss Abott and the Doctor, both of which I found thanks to a Reddit thread on romance stories. I’d been looking for something to read and found these. I was hooked, immediately.

I wrote about my deep abiding love of Check Please! on both FangirlNation and my personal blog and it really was a gateway drug for me. Since then I’ve devoured (all on WEBTOON):

Suitor Armor

El Ronin (a writer friend is writing this and it’s amazing so far)

Love Me Knot

The Strange Tales of Oscar Zahn

Not Even Bones (which my 8 year old loves as well)

Aerial Magic

And I am still looking forward to reading Lore Olympus, which everyone says is amazing.

I’ve also reread Check Please like 5 times, it’s serious comfort reading now.

And it is a comfort. In a year where my normal coping mechanisms seemed to cause just as much anxiety as the outside world, it was a breath of much needed air to find something new to take that spot. I’ve always loved comics and finding these webcomics was a definite boon to my eclectic reading habits.

I’m hoping this new year will let me back to my beloved books, but I won’t be walking away from this new found source of joy. The written word is important to me, in any form it comes.
