These anthology comics are always great, and Edgar Allen Poe’s Snifter of Blood #5 continues with it’s impressive feat of never having a bad story.
With four new stories by writers like Paul Cornell, Kek – W, Jake Williams and Dan Wicklethwaite Ahoy Comics has once again shown that they are all about finding interesting voices to keep readers interested. Like the other issues before, there is a mix of comic and short story. It’s evenly spaced here, with The Adventure of Three Narrators and Ms. Found in a Bottle being comics, and Sorry, But You’re Going To Be Nude In This Scene and As We Mean To Go On being short stories.
(Before we get into the meat of it, can we talk about how awesome the titles are? Because Sorry, But You’re Going To Have To Be Nude In This Scene is pretty much the best short story title ever. Thank you Jake Williams for this perfection)
Ignore, the fact that I am wearing, indoors, a very warm and heavy hat intended for field sports.
I cannot lie, I snorted. Probably my favorite aspect of these Poe comics is the way the writers find ways to take the piss out of the characters. In the first comic of this issue we met a snarky as hell Holmes and go on adventure like you might expect. What you don’t expect is the sass. You also don’t expect….dental fetishism, like, you definitely don’t expect that. (or if you do, maybe we should talk) This first comic, The Adventure of Three Narrators, sets the entire tone of balls to the wall weirdness. And I gotta say, I love it.
Abandon all literature!
As a writer and as a reader, I frowned at that line, but Ms. Found in a Bottle makes up for that cringe inducing line by being one of the weirdest comics I’ve ever read. When you add in the two short stories, this issue is one of my favorites of the series. You don;t find a word that doesn’t entertain, and you’ll find yourself snort laughing. And if you don’t, then maybe humor isn’t for you.
