‘Learning Tagalog With Kayla’ is a Funny Look Into COVID Frustrations and Isolation

Share

Designed like an old cable access language learning program, the short film Learning Tagalog With Kayla features Kayla Abuda Galang as she begins to teach common phrases in Tagalog. Of course, when you ask how she’s doing, she of course has to tell you how she’d riding out the pandemic. Whether it’s baking, dealing with your roommate that is trying to make you exercise or playing video games to deal, Kayla will teach you to say it in Tagalog with that retro lo-fi public access feel.

Learing Tagalog with Kayla was made in eight days with translation help from her mom.  Kayla is an Austin, filmmaker.  You can screen it at the 2021 SXSW online festival. It perfectly captures that feeling of malaise and attempting to deal with a world we feel little control in.
