Snow Angels #2

And we’re back in the frozen wasteland for Snow Angels #2 and it gave me shivers. (I’m sorry. It was so easy, I had to.)

In this second issue we get more of a backstory to what brought Pa, Millie and Mae to life in The Trench.  In the first few pages, after the elusive and horrifying Snowman skates off, we learn the story of The Olden Ones. How they were giants who lived long ago.

Long, long ago. Before father’s father, or his father, or his father.

After the massacre, Pa brings his two girls on a walk, himself breaking one of the three rules. He plans to leave The Trench.

This story quickly becomes an adventure instead of just a post-apocalyptic story. They have a map, but it’s not full. They have stories of what is in different areas of The Trench, but people who go to far, die. It’s harrowing, their journey, and they don’t get far before tragedy strikes.

Like the first comic, this one doesn’t give you too much info. The writing is almost as stark as the landscape, and it really, really works. You feel their fear and anxiety about this new direction. Not every writer can draw you in as well as Lemire does here, with three characters. With his words, and Jock’s art this comic really is something special.  It’s been on my mind a lot, leading up to this second issue and I was worried, that maybe it wouldn’t measure up to the first issue, but my worry was clearly unfounded.

Snow Angels #2 released today from comiXology.
