I loved the first two issues of Snow Angels and I’m not sure how I missed the third one, but today I got to catch up. Boy am I glad I got to.
Each issue picks up right where the previous one left off, which is nice and it means that the third issue starts with Pa wounded and the Snowman bearing down. Luckily Mae Mae has a good idea and they’re able to eek out a win. The win might not last too long depending on what the heck that thing under the ice is. They call it The Colden Ones, but it sorta looks like a dinosaur, so I’m really interested in where Lemire takes the story line. There is also more backstory about lost family in this issue and a great deal of female empowerment which is always wicked cool to see.
Issue 4 of Snow Angels; the end of Book 1, is a mf-en doozy.
So, without giving spoilers…uh, stuff happens.
Okay, but for real. In this issue you learn that all that these three characters know may be a lie. As the reader you can tell that there was a civilization, there are mechanics that the girls think run on magic, and the clothes have to come from somewhere, but for the girls inside the story, it’s all magic and lore. Near the end of this issue, Pa lays it out. He lied. He lied to them and he’s been lying for a long time. What happens may very well be his comeuppance.
The end of this issue leaves you with a lot of questions and I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely going to be sitting on my hands waiting to find out the answers to them. Because more than anything else about this comic, the emotions dig deep. They hook you. I am hooked. I need to know who the Snowman is. I need to know when and how the trench happened. I need to know what happens next. I have some thoughts, some theories, but I still want to, no need to, know.
