I can’t be perfect, but I can be my best.
Black Beacon is finally upon us.
This interstellar comic from Ryan K. Lyndsay and Sebastian Piriz is being serialized in the Heavy Metal Magazine, but it is also coming out as a single issue release model, starting on July 28. (today! woo!)
Black Beacon is about Niko Vaughan, a human who is on a mission through the stars to arrive at a Dyson Sphere of immense size where we have been told an intergalactic meeting of cultures is to take place. Unfortunately, this message might have been bunk because all Niko finds is the same old bullshit as she left behind, but now she’s a celestial refugee and must find a place to live and a way to survive quickly.
And y’all…. Black Beacon is gorgeous. Story, art… it’s all gorgeous. (i’ll try to contain my fangirling, but Piriz’s art tho…drools)
…when your world keeps getting worse, you can’t expect yourself to inversely become something star-shattering.
The wisdom young Niko exudes, while in the midst of well, a mess. It’s inspiring. She’s a great character to root for. She’s scrappy and sassy and honest, and you want things to go right. Especially when they’re all going so wrong.
Our beliefs are just answers our brain accepts becasue the questions get too heavy.
Seriously, Niko (insanely smartly written by Lindsay) is dropping knowledge left and right through this comic. And that’s just the first few pages. Honestly, I wanted to find fault here. I don’t want to be one of those reviewers that is all “it’s perfect” for every comic, but there is no fault to be foudn here. It’s a first issue so there is a good deal of set up but there’s not annoying, info dump here. It’s well paced and well executed and it leaves you wanting more.
Currently I’m just hoping that Lindsay continues to find my reviews fun/funny enough that he keeps sending me these amazing comics. And, well, if you get Heavy Metal Magazine, be on the look out. This story is can’t miss.
