This weeks episode of Marvel’s What If…? was titled: What if the world lost it’s mightiest heroes? And it pulled no punches.
There was shocking deaths one after another; killing Stark, Thor, Barton, Banner and Romanov in a straight line of super hero murder.
The Avengers fell before they had a chance to rise. – Coulson
This episode focused mainly on Nick Fury (thankfully voiced by Samuel L Jackson) and Natasha Romanov (not voiced by Scarlett Johansson) as they tried to figure out who was killing the names on the Avengers short list. It was heartbreaking to see the characters we love get killed so mercilessly, especially Banner, as it wasn’t a pretty way to go out. There were cameos by Betty Ross, her d-bag daddy General Thaddeus Ross, Sif, and of course, my favorite, Loki.
Loki came to avenge his brother, and of course ended up in his favorite spot in the end; ruling us silly humans. It was amusing to see that he could have accomplished his goal in the Avengers movie, if only he had use his silver tongue to get what he wanted. Oh well.
Of the three episodes so far, this one was the weakest in my opinion. I am starting to think that Marvel believes they can throw Loki at us fans to amke us happy (we do love Loki) but this episode was choppy in places and weirdly the art and movement was off. It was also annoying to once again throw Captain Marvel in at the very end, because she’s supposed to save us all. If she is that great… what is the point of any of the other heroes?
Like I said, the weakest of the three, but still not terrible. I did like all the little wink wink, nudge nudge moments about Coulson’s deep love of Captain America (the Steve Rogers version). And the jokes about Thor’s hair were quite funny.
There was also a line at the end, said by The Watcher that I think explains exactly why so many of us love a super hero story (comic or otherwise).
“I believe that in this universe, as in every other, that hope never dies.“
