What If…? Ultron won

*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***

This week’s episode of Marvel’s What If…? was What if Ultron won, and apparently if Ultron won, the planet dies. And then the universe. And then the multiverse. Because Ultron is a greedy, greedy boy.

So, aside from this episode being vastly better than last week’s, it also marks a divergence from the previous episodes for the series. Episodes 1-6 were all stand alone, no real connections between them, but 7, 8 and 9 are all linked.  If you’ve been following along with my reviews, then you’ll know that I was sorely disappointed with last week’s episode that gave us party boy himbo Thor and a tease of Ultron with all the Infinity Stones. Last week I had no clue that that one single shot was setting up this week’s episode and then the final episode of the series as well.

Epiosde 8 did follow along with the earlier episodes that was all about killing all our favorite Marvel characters. Here all we have is Natasha and Clint, and Clint, well, he doesn’t last long.  Ultron alone was nearly unbeatable, literally slicing through Thanos. But Ultron with the Infinity Stones? He was powerful enough to spot The Watcher and then turn his destruction onto the Multiverse. It was the first time that the Watcher interacted with any of the characters and it was so well done (I especially liked the bit where Ultron punched the Watcher through different realities). The episode ended with the horrifying Doctor Strange from his episode where he went off the rails and it sets up the last episode, where hopefully the Watcher and Mad Doctor Strange will seemingly team up to defeat Ultron.

This week’s episode was the best one in a bit, and even though our characters continue to get killed off (who hurt you, Marvel?), I am back fully invested. Make sure to keep an eye out as I’ll be back here next Wednesday with the final episode review.
