If you can remember back to the Spawn movie from 1997, you may remember John Leguizamo playing Spawn’s arch-enemy, The Clown. This actor, comedian, and Broadway star has gone from Chi Chi Rodriguez to comic book writer of the new series PhenomX. I had no idea Leguizamo is a prolific playwright and has at least 6 successful written Broadway shows under his belt, including the highest-grossing solo play in Los Angeles. In short, he’s got the writing chops and I’m starting to get excited about this comic even though its associated with Todd McFarlane.
PhenomX comes from an all Latino creative team, which also includes writers Aram Rappaport, Joe Miciak, Damian Slattery, and artist Chris Batista, inker Sabrina Cintron, and colorist Chris Sotomayor.
Here’s the official synopsis:
The first issue is an extra-length comic featuring cover art by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. PhenomX centers around the character, Max Gomez, who was wrongfully imprisoned and is desperate to regain his freedom, and Max agrees to become a subject in an underground government experiment. When the trial gives him phenomenal shape-shifting abilities, Gomez learns his new “freedom” requires surviving a superpowered war fought on the streets of New York City.
Leguizamo is going to hand-sign each of 250 copies of an incentive variant of the comic as well.
Look for PhenomX Wednesday November 3, 2021.
