I always feels so lucky when I get the opportunity to chat with comic creators and today is no different. Warwick Johnson-Caldwell is working with one of my heroes, Mike Mignola and I got the pleasure of sending him a few questions about their new collaboration.
How does it feel to go back to an old universe to get to play again?
It feels great! As soon as I started drawing Mr. Higgins Comes Home, the ideas started flying out. There were some great ones, there were some terrible ones, and loads that I just forgot. But the more time I spend in this universe, the more ideas and stories take form, and the more fun I’m having.
Why now?
As soon as I finish each book, I’ve been keen to get back to these characters again. Though each book has come to an end without the certainty of another volume, I’m always hopeful. But I’ve got away with quite a lot already. Also, timing has been fairly out of control throughout the pandemic. I’m so happy to see this book has made it.
How is the working relationship with Mike Mignola?
It’s amazing in the respect that he lets me get up to what I want, and I haven’t messed it up yet. As this is a universe all its own, there is no possible knock-on or upset with characters or timelines. The Hellboy universe must be a proper minefield to navigate, and I bet there’s much-needed critical scrutiny throughout. Mike Mignola has been a big influence on my work and is a constant source of inspiration. That’s where his input comes with these books.
What is next for you?
I’m always dreaming of more adventures with these guys. But I’ll have artwork in James Aquilone’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker Kickstarter, running now. I’ve also a new series this year, coming from a brand-new publishing partnership. No vampires there so far.
