‘Monster Crush’ Explores Love, Gender, and What It Means to Be an Outsider

Ruby Reid’s life has taken a serious turn. Her parents have split up, leaving Ruby to leave with her father while her mother sets up a new life and veterinary practice. Her whole life, she’s loved the idea of monsters but has been told time and again that monsters don’t exist. Things change when Ella Mooney starts to attend the same school as Ruby. Ella has never had ice cream. She’s brand new to experiences like a Ferris wheel ride, and doesn’t seem to understand the ins and outs of being a teenager. Oh, and she turns into a creature with fangs and a tail. Ruby not only has to come to terms with the lovely new monster in her life, but the monster crush she has on the creature who has stolen her heart.

Erin Ellie Franey’s MonsterCrush is an adorable LGBTQIA+ story that’s perfect for young adults. The characters are adorable, and the characters are treated with love and care.   This graphic novel not only explores a lesbian love story, but also discusses questions of self-identity, being chased from your home, and the importance of family.

MonsterCrush is available in stores March 13, 2024.
