Roxy’s dream is to become a legend in the world of Pizza Witchery. While she spends all her spare time creating the perfect pizza, Roxy is convinced that she’ll only be ready for magical university and pursuing her pizza dreams alone once she finishes an internship with the Pizza Warlock. Unfortunately, the Pizza Warlock tends to see Roxy as a perfect excuse for his laziness. She’s always ready to take on a quest (aka errands he needs her to run). Roxy’s parents, and her familiar George, are sick and tired of watching Roxy waste her time. When Roxy is given a quest to find a magical pizza artifact, the Remarkable Oregano, the Pizza Warlock sits back and expects her to bring the ingredient to him without him lifting a finger. Roxy’s parents make a deal with her; if she fails this quest, she’ll come to work with them and their gourmet magic for the next of the year. Armed with a cake, George, and the supplies her parents have packed for her, Roxy sets off on the quest of her pizza-making life.
I’m almost positive that if I see the names Sarah Graley and Stef Purenins on a comic that I’m powerless not to pick it up. Pizza Witch may be designed for a YA reader, but the adorable art and fun story definitely appeals to adults as well. Sarah and Stef’s art is always cute, colorful, and a delight to flip through. Pizza Witch is no exception. The story is relatable for anyone who has ever had a dream and fallen into pitfalls while trying to reach it. That can be bad bosses or terrible advice, but like Roxy we learn through our experiences. Fans of Disney’s short run of the show The Owl House will find a familiar feel in this graphic novel. George is the most delightful and snarky little familiar cat.
