Today the first issue of the new series Leviathan Freedom comes to ComiXology. The planned five-issue miniseries is a retelling of the life of Robert Smalls, but with the twist of this happening far into the future in space. For those who aren’t aware, Robert Small was a black man born into slavery who became a hero of the American Civil War when he commandeered a Confederate ship and sailed to and others to freedom and the Union forces. His actions in no small part changed President Lincoln’s mind to allow African American soldiers to serve the Union army.
Issue #1 of Leviathan Freedom follows Smalls as a member of a labor caste of workers called the Doldrums. With a galaxy split by Civil War, it is members of the Doldrums who often bear the highest cost in life and injury. Smalls s often sought out by the captain of the war machine he sails in, much to his distaste. Given only six-hours a day to do so, he wants simply to live his life with his family and get through the day. When the war vessel crashes, Smalls is faced with the choice of whether to keep letting those around him suffer or to take a stand.
For fans of The Expanse, Leviathan Freedom is going to have a familiar feel to it. Rage Against the Machine guitarist and legend Tom Morello and writer Marc Guggenheim write the story, with stunningly beautiful artwork by Szymon Kudrański.
