Interview with Erica D’Urso

With the upcoming release of Inferno Girl Red and the truly epic Kickstarter it has going, I’m once again getting to chat with one of the creators involved. I’ve already chatted with writer Mat Groom, and today I get to share my interview with artist Erica D’Urso.

How and when did you start to get into drawing comics?

I started drawing when I was very little. I was very shy and uneasy at making friends, so my ways to express myself were drawing and reading. I always wanted to draw in life, but I started to dig into comics pretty late during my teenage years, and when I understood they were my “destiny,” it was just six years ago. I was having a bad period, I thought I’d wasted my time not pursuing my dreams, I was about to give up on drawing. But well, something clicked and I started to really put all myself into comics.

Can you give us an idea of what you worked on before Inferno Girl Red?

I started working overseas in 2016/2017; there was no break, I wanted to start working at all costs, and well, it cost me a hurt back at the end of the year—that was pretty scary because I couldn’t move my arms! In that period, one of the editors that saw my work reply me back, it was Pat Shand from Space Between Ent. I could say that thanks to him I didn’t give up on trying. 2018 was my debut launch, I worked with him on Prison Witch and later that year I was able to work for Marvel on Life of Captain Marvel, which was a great honor and joy! After that I worked with Dynamite on Xena and James Bond, until 2020 that was a pretty bad period for everyone. Mat and Kyle wrote to me just during the pandemic.

How was it working with Mat Groom?

Mat is a great person, I’m able to speak with him about almost everything and he’s always more than enthusiastic to listen to my ideas. It’s great to be able to share opinions with someone creative like you.

How did you get brought into the project?

It was all thanks to Mat and Kyle. Mat was working on this project for some years already, but he didn’t find the right artist yet. They came up to me and thought I was the right one, and for me it’s a great honor to fit Mat’s ideal style for this project.

What else are you working on now?

I’ve just finished a couple of issues for Marvel; the first one is the new series Mighty Valyries by Torunn Grønbekk where I’ll share the issue with the main artist  Mattia de Iulis and will be out from 21th April. The other one will come out later this year, written by Jason Aaron and is the first issue of Power Princess, part of the Heroes Reborn series.
